In Fall and Winter 2025, I completed my final capstone studio at SCAD by designing a public elementary school centered on inclusivity, adaptability, and student well-being. The project was set within an existing cedar lumber factory in Lebanon, Tennessee, and focused on adaptive reuse as a means of honoring the site’s history while supporting the future of education.
The design was guided by principles of universal design, sensory-responsive planning, and neuro-inclusion, with a strong emphasis on creating flexible learning environments that accommodate a wide range of cognitive, sensory, and social needs. The goal was to move beyond one-size-fits-all education by crafting spaces that help all students feel safe, supported, and empowered.
This project reflects my commitment to human-centered design and my belief that thoughtful, inclusive spaces can foster meaningful change in both education and the built environment.
Below are the final presentation boards I created to support my verbal capstone presentation, delivered at the end of the twenty-week studio. A downloadable PDF of my full design process book is also available, detailing the research, concept development, and planning behind this project.
